Versatile, Oscar-winning actor Sidney Poitier is always a stalwart and reliable presence, not matter what chaos transpires around him. In tribute to this great actor, the Grandview Library screens four of his most vaunted and remarkable performances. Celebrate Black History Month!
Mondays at 6:30 pm: February 4, 11 & 25, and March 4.
2/4: Blackboard Jungle (1955). A new white teacher singles out a black student at a hostile urban school. Co-starring Glenn Ford.
2/11: The Defiant Ones (1958). Two chained black & white escaped convicts are forced to work together. Co-starring Tony Curtis.
2/18: OFF
2/25: Lilies of the Field (1963). German nuns in Arizona believe a traveling black worker is sent by God. Poitier first black actor to win Best Actor Oscar.
3/4: To Sir With Love (1967). A new, black teacher struggles with white students in a tough London school.
