Columbus celebrates reading
Get involved with a national campaign to encourage America to read!
In April & May, the Greater Columbus Arts Council (GCAC)—along with partners such as Thurber House, The Asian Festival, WOSU Public Media and The Ohio State University—encourage you to participate in a celebration called The Big Read, with events, discussion, online multimedia, and a visits with author Amy Tan (The Joy Luck Club).
The Big Read is designed to restore reading to the center of American culture. It's an initiative of the National Endowment for the Arts (NEA), partnered with the Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS) and in cooperation with Arts Midwest.
The Big Read began after a 2004 NEA report found that fewer than half of American adults read literature. The study showed that literary reading was declining among all age groups, with the steepest decline in the youngest age groups.
