GHPL Mobile Exhibits

The Grandview Heights Public Library has launched a new exhibit project that combines wonder, engagement, and learning with all-in-one, interactive mobile kiosks for all ages.

GHPL Mobile Exhibits are compact, museum-quality kiosks featuring:

  • Showcases for artifacts and specimens
  • Engaging, educational visuals
  • Craft table for all ages
  • Interactive touchscreen
  • Book displays

The project is funded with private money by the Grandview Heights Public Library Foundation. The mission of the Foundation is to raise private funds to ensure the long-term financial security of the library and enhance its services to serve the community.  Recent Foundation projects include the GHPL PopUp Library and WiFi in Grandview Parks.

The library will collaborate with museums and institutions to provide dynamic, educational content for themed exhibitions that support Ohio’s Learning Standards from the Ohio Department of Education.

In its inaugural collaboration, the library has partnered with the Museum of Biological Diversity at The Ohio State University to present Natural Wonders, a series of exhibitions featuring specimens and educational content from the museum.

The first exhibition of this series, entitled Skeletons, Disguises, and Creatures of the Night, features three interactive kiosks at the library during business hours through December 1, 2017. Museum specimens on display include bats, fish, birds, and insects.

Teachers may contact Youth Services to have collections of books gathered for school use.

  • Minimum of 3 business days advance notice required; more notice may assure that we can pull a better collection for you.
  • Materials can be gathered by subject.
  • No requests will be taken for seasonal & holiday books, due to high demand. Seasonal & holiday items will be on display and available for check-out on a first-come, first-served basis.
  • In some cases, materials may be shipped from other libraries in our consortium, which can require three to five additional business days.
  • To help serve everyone efficiently, please pick up your classroom collection on the requested pick-up date or call for an extension.

Ellison Die Cutter
A paper cutting machine is available to the public for in-library use in Youth Services on the lower level of the library. Choose from 50+ letters and designs. Please bring your own paper.

Grandview Heights School Student Cards
Student cards are provided to the Grandview Heights Schools each school year so that students who do not have them may access databases and downloadable items through our website.

Library Visits
Teachers may bring their class to the library for tours, research, assignments, and projects. Please reserve a date and time in advance with staff to alleviate any space or resource conflicts.

Outreach to Schools
Youth Services provides outreach services to Grandview preschools and day cares during the school year. The Youth Services Outreach Coordinator provides each school or daycare with a book delivery and a story time each month. During the summer months, outreach is limited, but some services may be available to Grandview daycare or summer groups that wish to come to the library for weekly or monthly visits. Library Surplus Sale

The library will have a Surplus Sale on Saturday, June 24, from 10 am-4 pm, in Conference Room B on the library’s lower level.

  • Items for sale include: Older e-readers and other electronic devices, wooden book shelves, office desks, office chairs, cubicle walls, file cabinets, various office supplies, and more.
  • Items will be sold “as is” with no guarantees.
  • Cash or check only; credit card payment unavailable.
  • Buyers must remove all items at their own expense by Monday, June 26, at 6 pm.

Board games now available

board_gamesCreate opportunities for all ages to play and learn by checking out board games from the Grandview Heights Public Library (GHPL).

Forty-six games are available from the library, thanks to a $1,249 grant from the Grandview Heights/Marble Cliff Education Foundation.

Games offer many learning opportunities. Children can learn early literacy skills such as letter and number recognition, memory development, and vocabulary. Older children improve skills such as logical thinking abilities, communication, and social skills. Games also create opportunities to bridge generation gaps and create fun memories for the whole family.

Each game was carefully selected based on reviews, awards, staff experiences with the games, and their educational components. The selection of games covers a wide target age range and can be enjoyed by families, community groups, and even classrooms. Sturdy carrying cases for the games were also purchased with the grant.

GHPL and the Education Foundation have partnered to create this lending program as a way for foster different types of learning styles and encourage lifelong learning. GHPL and the Education Foundation partnered to provide GHPL’s Early Learning Backpacks lending program in 2016 and Acoustic Guitar Lending program in 2015.

Games are available and on display in Youth Services on the lower level of the library.

Games circulate for 28 days, are available for checkout only at GHPL, and must be returned to GHPL. Overdue fines are 10 cents per day.

Print celebrates patron, love of reading

A colorful, framed print celebrating a longtime patron and the love of reading is on display in Youth Service on the lower level of the library.

The print depicts a scene of a dragon and a child reading together from the animated film How to Train Your Dragon (2010), based on the children’s book series by Cressida Cowell.

It was donated to the library in memory of Henry Davies Webster (September 1, 1999 – April 27, 2016) by a friend of the family.

Although Henry’s family lives in another part of Columbus, they have visited GHPL often over the years.

Henry spent many happy hours in Youth Services and is fondly remembered for his love of books and reading.

Outdoor summer concerts

2012_0626_MOL_British_Invasion4-400x400Enjoy great summer concerts at the 32 Annual Music on the Lawn outdoor concert series at the library.

The series, coordinated by the library and Grandview Heights Parks & Recreation, brings the community together for live music and family fun Tuesdays in June & July from 7:30-8:30 pm.

The Central Ohio Food Truck Association and the Tri-Village Chamber Partnership will provide a food truck for each concert, and the Friends of the Grandview Library will be selling beverages to benefit the library.

Continued support from local businesses and organizations has helped build the series into a destination event in Grandview Heights/Marble Cliff. More than 5,000 people attend an average of eight concerts every year.

The series is presented by the library and Grandview Heights Parks & Recreation.

GHPL receives 9th five-star rating

in

Library JournalLJstarLibs2016SlugHiRes has named the Grandview Heights Public Library one of America’s best public libraries with a ranking of five stars for the 9th consecutive year.

GHPL also ranked 2nd in the nation in its size category for the 4th consecutive year.

The Library Journal Index of Public Library Service identified outstanding public libraries in its America’s Star Libraries 2016. Ratings are based on 2014 data from the IMLS—circulation (physical and digital materials), visits, program attendance, and Internet use, each per capita.

More than 7,300 libraries across the country were evaluated, with 260 receiving a starred rating and 85 libraries receiving a five-star rating.

GHPL is one of only 17 libraries nationwide to receive a five-star rating in all nine editions.

Lighting improvements

AREA-Atrium0708The Grandview Heights Public Library is implementing lighting upgrades throughout the building to reduce energy costs, reduce labor, and improve lighting quality. 

The library will save in energy, operating, and maintenance costs, as outlined in a report prepared by Dynamix Engineering Services. Additionally, the quality of lighting throughout the library will be improved for patrons.  

Replacement bulbs for existing lighting fixtures will soon become unavailable. The majority of existing fluorescent bulbs will be replaced with high-efficiency LED bulbs. These bulbs will need to replaced only once every 10 years, significantly reducing maintenance costs. 

Investing in these energy conservation measures will provide a significant return on investment for the community. Over 10 years, the library expects to save approximately $220,000: $107,000 in energy costs and 113,000 in labor and maintenance. Nearly all current lighting fixtures will be retained. 

The $140,000 project is also eligible for $9,000 in energy rebates that will expire soon. This brings the net cost of the project to approximately $131,000, using money already budgeted in the library’s building fund. 

The project is expected to be completed by October 2016, with the work conducted by Dynamix Engineering Services.
